The modern marathon was inspired by the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., where a vastly outnumbered Greek army defeated the invading Persians. According to legend, an Athenian soldier named Pheidippides ran approximately 25 miles from the battlefield to Athens to announce the victory, collapsing from exhaustion and dying immediately after delivering the message.
I wanted to retrace his steps from roughly 2500 years ago.
No training, heatwave conditions, and no clear path or support. Wish me luck.
